7 Days till race day and a good day for a brick

By Skip

So it is one week from the big day.  I have sat down and carefully planned each and every workout from now until then.  I have ready many articles on how to prepare for a race and I am somewhat confused… some people say rest your legs the week of a race and other say to keep in motion and keep working out, maybe not as intense.

I am going with option two.  The last thing I want is to get out there and get winded because my pacing is all off or whatever.

So today, I did another brick.  Doing this on a Saturday morning is MUCH better as the the traffic is very light compared to the last time I did it.  Not a great overall time for my bike ride but I think I hit every single red light and was not keeping track of my stopped time vs bike time.  It felt like there was a 20 mph head wind no matter which part of the route.  THAT was tough.

I practiced my transition, downed some G2 and Gu and went right into my 5k run……

This is a very, very hard thing to do, as most of your know.  Your feet REALLY feel foreign to the rest of your body and it is a HUGE effort to pick up your foot for each and every step.  The good news is that it DOES get easier as you go along but overall endurance is a huge factor.

I thought I might finish a little bit stronger as I really pushed myself through the entire run.  After looking at my stats, it really was not THAT bad considering this is only the second time I have done this and it really is not that much off from just my regular 5K time.  That must mean I am not biking hard enough, right?

Actually, I KNOW my biking is really weak right now.  One thing I need to do this week is to get to the bike store and have them put smooth times on that bike.  I think that will help out quite a bit.  Maybe even get some Aero bars for the bike?  I am not quite sure what to do there.  In the upcoming month I need to examine that bike and compare it to the USAT rules and guidelines to make sure it qualifies.  That last thing I want to do is get there, go through the motions and then get disqualified!  That would not make for a good day.

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
