A cramp and blister reality check

By Skip

After yesterday I was curious to see how my body would react to another day of running.  We got home from work and cooked up a bowl of whole wheat pasta.  I did not feel like I had enough energy to run without eating first…. waited my three hours to let me food digest and headed out on my run.

Let’s just say that what I thought would be a nice stroll down a route I have done many times before was anything but nice or fun.  This was not an easy run for me.  I really needed an easy one after yesterday’s interval workout.  As soon as I started running (sock-less) I felt like my left foot was rubbing too much.  Sure enough it was not long before I realized I had a blister coming on.  By the END of the run, it was pretty bad and I had to limp back.

In addition, about one mile into the run I ended up getting stomach cramps. I am sure that the cramps were from that large pasta dinner I had a few hours earlier. I guess I didn’t wait long enough before heading out. Will I never learn?  I need to either alter my running schedule or eating patterns.  Maybe even concentrate more on nutrition?

Other than the blister, my legs felt good!

I can see already that this plan is going to kick my butt. I will be putting in more miles that I ever have. The good news is that this will also build me up nicely for events such as 10K and half marathons.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
