A devastating shattering of reality

By Skip

Have you ever believed in something that you were so sure of and then you were presented with the truth and found out you were wrong?  Were you blown away?  You know, to the point were you started to question everything in life?  Okay, maybe it was not that dramatic but I recently had something happen to me that drove me crazy and I still can’t believe it is true…. read on!

My entire adult adult life, from the time I was, let’s say 17-18 or so (that’s right, last  century) I have always known my height to be 5 feet, 10 inches tall.  I have used that number on every form of identification, in the doctor’s office, insurance paperwork, etc.  At some point I was measured and this is what my height was, or so I thought until about two months ago.

I was being fitted for a new bike and I was asked for a bunch of measurements.  One of them was my height.  I don’t know why I just didn’t put a number down but I decided to line up against the wall and have my wife measure me.   As she said “68 inches” I paused and ran the numbers quickly through my head.  I replied back to her, “No, you have it wrong… make sure you measure straight across my head and make sure the mark is level.”  She measured again…. 68 inches.

68 INCHES?  68 INCHES?  Since when did I become 5’8″ and why was I not notified?  Who took it upon themselves to modify my vital statistics and not send it to me in writing?  I must have had her measure me another 5 times or so just to make sure and the number kept coming out the same…. I can’t believe that a doctor or SOMEBODY lied to me years ago and I have been living that lie this whole time.  Or have I?

Then it hit me….

I might be shrinking!

I know they say that the older you get you start to shrink.  But I am only 41 for goodness sake!  Then my mind started racing with additional thoughts such as my entire weight loss campaign, racing weight, calorie counts, and calories burned every day was based upon my age, weight and height.  That means I have to crunch the numbers ALL OVER AGAIN.

So now, with a new reality, does that mean I need to keep track of my height on a daily basis to add to my other daily statistics?

Just to finish things off, here is an excerpt from an article I found online along with a link to the entire article if you want to read more:

When we say older people shrink, we don’t mean they become tiny enough to fit in your pocket! We just mean that it’s common for older people to become a little shorter over time. It isn’t dramatic or sudden. It takes place over years and may add up to only an inch or so off of their adult height (maybe a little more, maybe less). This kind of shrinking can’t be reversed, although people can slow or stop this process. But why does shrinking happen at all?

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
