About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I cannot be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why?

I was never really the athletic type.  Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (previously an entertainer) and wanted to take some pounds off.  How much? Well, that is still up for debate.

Luckily my wife also wanted to lose some weight so we did it together… gradually over the next year.  It makes it much easier when two people can do it together and have a similar goal!  I took off about 40 pounds in one years time!  I went from a size 36″ jeans to size 31″!!  I have not been 31″ for a very, very long time.  So, I thought I had done what I needed to do, that is, until I went to see my doctor for my annual physical.

In December of ’09 he congratulated me on my weight loss and officially took me off of my high blood pressure medication.  But when he ran my blood work he found out that my cholesterol was through the roof.  You see, when I was loosing weight I was not watching WHAT I was eating, just HOW MUCH I was eating.  Obviously I was not eating the right things.  In addition, I had lost this weight without exercising….. I did it all via portion control.

I found myself approaching my 40th year of life with a major challenge.  Either start exercising and eating better or go on cholesterol medication….. ahhhhh… well… I chose the first option!

So for Christmas I asked for a pair of Nike+ shoes and a Nike+ sensor.  Once I had that I was ready to go and began doing some investigation as to what I should start running…. since I had never done anything like this before.

I ran across a program called C25K or Couch To 5K.  Basically taking a “non-runner” and converting them through a 9 week course to run a 5K.

Little did I know that this was just the start to a new chapter in my life.  After completing several triathlons last year and doing very well in them I started to realize I had a hidden talent that I never knew I had.  By the end of the year I was placing 1st in my age group on almost every single running race I ran and even taking “masters” at one event.

2011 holds some pretty interesting challenges for me from half marathons, numerous 5k races, 10k races, sprint triathlons and even the Escape From Alcatraz this year in June.  I even have bigger goals in 2012 and 2013 but I will share those with you as they solidify.

I started this blog to keep myself on track and put myself “officially” on the record.  This site has built quite a bit of traction over the time frame that I started it and I am beginning to see that it helps others out there that are also in my shoes… no pun intended.  This site will continue to be a tool for those people.

Please comment all you like and I will respond to the best of my knowledge.  And if you ever see I am doing something wrong, PLEASE LET ME KNOW as I am counting on your knowledge and any information you can pass along my way will help others in the long run.
