Alcatraz Qualifier, the San Diego Triathlon

By Skip

If you have been following my blog for a while you will know that I am very intrigued with the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon that will take place next year in June.  This race is not for the average person.  It is a pretty intense course.  After a little bit of research I found out that you can not just enter the race… you need to either pre-qualify or enter into their lottery system which begins in December.

The problem with the lottery is that the race is limited to 2000 participants.  The lottery produces about 9000 or so  entries so you don’t have great chances to get in.  By competing in a pre-qualifing race will at least give you a fighting chance.  Today, I heard the they are using the San Diego Triathlon  as that pre-qualifier.  Here is the catch:  Only 2 people from each age group will be qualified.  Talk about tough!

Anyway, thought I would share this information below with you in case anybody else is interested.  A link to the website is listed below.

The San Diego Triathlon is the newest qualifying race in the Escape to Alcatraz Triathlon Series!

Over the last 30 years, the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon has established itself as one of the premier triathlons in the world and one of the few to be featured on national TV. Its popularity has also made it one of the hardest races to get into.

The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon accepts a maximum of 2,000 participants with upwards of 9,000 requesting an entry slot through a random lottery system. The Escape to Alcatraz Triathlon Series was developed in 2003 as an additional option for those looking to participate in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

The best amateur male and female competitors from each race will qualify in the following manner:

    Qualifiers (50)

You can also qualify through a local race I ran this year, Gateway to the Bay Triathlon. I ran the sprint though, don’t think that can qualify you. It may just be the Olympic. It’s a great race. If you’re considering it, let me know, you can crash with us although I’ll have to get clearance closer to the race with the wife…

That is good to know and thank you for the offer. I need to do a little more research about other qualifying races and see if I can find something closer to home…. then again I LOVE San Diego! However, that race is getting a lot of publicity and only 1st and 2nd place in each age group are getting through.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
