An athlete, deconstructed

By Skip

It has been 6 weeks since my last race, the one in which I was injured on the bike.  Before I get “deconstructed,” let me just say that it took a good 3-4 weeks before I was fully recovered from that.  However, that incident has derailed my season, my goals and my inspiration.

It has destroyed my fitness level, nutrition and weight as well as totally sucked up my motivationWHAT?  Just kidding?  Not really.  I wanted to explain this because it could happen to anyone… it could happen to YOU.

The three solid weeks of recovery was not fun but it was also nice to kick back and not have to get out there and train a couple hours a day… every day!  Unfortunately my body and mind got used to that and once I had recovered, I continued to make excuses for not getting out there… the weather, work, my schedule… you name it.  I missed three races that were on my schedule:  a Duathlon, triatlon and a 5K.  I have never missed a race… EVER!

As of today, September 26th, I am 10 pounds heavier than I was a 6 weeks ago and I am 20 pounds heavier than I was back in April and I feel like crap.  Let me emphasize, that 141 pounds is NOT weight I am going to strive to be again…. I had no energy and I looked “man-orexic.”  150 was a very good weight for me and I need to get back to that as soon as possible.  Today I woke up a little out of breath and my jeans were starting to get tight…. oh heck, as long as I am being honest, they WERE tight!

Some of you are in shock right now, I know… and YOU are the main reason why I am getting back out there.  I have been an inspiration to many people and I don’t want this to derail you from your goals that you set out to complete.  This is just another “re-making” of me!  Not only am I going to conquer, I am going to do it in style and kick butt all at the same time.  You can mark my words and take it to the bank!

This is where I need you to step in… I need you to encourage and push me and don’t let me get lazy… I have several half marathons I want to squeeze in this year in addition to a sub 18 minute 5k.  Can you help me?  I am counting on you……

Today I am getting back out on the road (after stretching REAL good) and start putting the miles in again.  I have some pretty big goals this year that I will not let pass me by.  I am still seeking that sub 18 minute 5K.  The only way I am going to be able to pull that off is if I get my butt in gear and get back out there!

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
