And the first run results….

Today was the first day I got out there to run “solo” and to test my knee and foot.  All the running I have been doing recently has been with my wife to help her with her C25K program so it has been very short spurts of running and at a very slow pace.  Today I scheduled a very simple 3.1 miles to see where things stood.

This was my official training schedule for the day:

  • WU: Run 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • MS: Run 5 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • CD: Run 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

There is no sense in posting my data online, for two reasons…. Reason number one, I was just trying to get through the distance and was playing around with different paces to see how things felt and how far I could push myself.  Reason number two, well, I forgot to start my Garmin until mile one so my final numbers do not really match the watch data.  Really?  “Mr. Data” forgets to turn on his data gathering device?  As you can imagine, I have multiple data gathering devices going at the same time so not all was lost.

As I headed out, I started to feel pain around mile 1 and by the end, well, that is all I could do. Luckily I didn’t plan a longer run or I would have been in trouble. The strange thing is that as soon as I was done, there was no more pain. I applied  cold / heat therapy to it just to be safe and to get everything back on track.

Lately, the sports tape I am using does not stick at all and it actually fell off my leg after mile one.  What the heck is up with that?  I sacrificed my leg hair on that side!  I even applied rubbing alcohol to clean the surface where the tape would be but still nothing.  This is too expensive of tape for it not to work.  I am going to try another brand to see if that helps.

I am also going to start studying more IT Band stretches.  I have incorporated one of them in my regular stretching regime but obviously I need to add more.  It looks like something I am going to have to deal with on a permanent basis so if I can find the right stretches to eliminate this, that would be awesome!  I really don’t care how much time it adds onto my pre-run workout…. as long as it works!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!
