Another day off but a new set of pedals

By Skip

I did it to myself AGAIN.  Taking another day off this weekend.  There is several reasons for this.  I got up around 5:00am to prepare for my lighting duties at church.  Following that, my wife and I moved our warehouse from one location to another which took most of the day.  The combination of getting up early and all the lifting, moving and sweating, I just couldn’t fathom the thought of doing an hour and half bike ride which is what I was scheduled to do.

That means doubling up tomorrow… even though I promised myself I wouldn’t do that again.  Arrrrgggghhhh.  Ok, so I won’t do it next time 🙂

In the meantime, let me tell you about some new pedals I got for my bike.  My friend Hoy was kind enough to let me borrow his spare bike shoes.  The only thing I needed to do is buy a pair of pedals that would fit with the cleats on the bottom of the shoes.  I went to the bike store and found these Shimano SPD pedals.

What I like about these pedals is that they have the clip on one side and a grip on the other side.  This means that you don’t always have to wear your biking shoes.  I was worried about that…. For instance, if I was just riding to the pool, I really don’t want to pull out the special biking shoes, clip in and take off.  Quite honestly, I really don’t relish the thought of clipping in and out in traffic, especially rush hour traffic.

I will let you know tomorrow how they perform and my first experience with the concept of clipping in and out… scary 🙂  I will close out this post with some closeups of the shoes:

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
