Back in the saddle again

By Skip

As the near year begins and I look forward at my goals and commitments for 2012, I realized that my training this year would involve  much more bike training.   In addition, my first big race of the year is in April so training for this starts very, very soon.

Before I get into my full-on training, I need to work back into my bike skills and endurance so my legs don’t cramp up on me when it comes time to put the hard work in.  This is also a very delicate balance of working those muscles and keeping soreness down to a manageable level as to not interfere with my run training and my run goals the early part of this season.

My first day back on the bike I jumped on the CompuTrainer and put in a solid 40 minute workout on a nice flat course.  I did not push real hard but I did work hard enough to work up a good sweat.  The days get dark early this time of year so by the time I get home from work it is dark enough where I have no choice but to hit the trainer on the patio.   I need to get into the habit of getting out on the road on the weekends so I don’t get locked into the trainer mentality and boredom.

Having said that, there is a great advantage to using a trainer and having it hooked up to a complicated piece of training equipment such as a CompuTrainer.  This year I am really concentrating on training with my power readings and basing my progress and improvement upon that.  I have always had strong legs and having that wattage number in the back of my head will really help me push my limits.

I look forward to this year of racing an making a big improvement in my cycling speed and skills.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
