Back in the swing(swim) of things

By Skip

So it has been a wild and crazy ride over the past week.  Today was the first real day of being back on my training plan since my San Diego trip.  I took inventory of what I missed out on and I am, at this point, very concerned.  I am not concerned that I won’t finish, I am worried I won’t be able to live up to my personal expectations.  I really wanted to complete this next race in under one hour.  Considering most of my workouts missed were the “peak training” week, I don’t know if I will be able to pull this off.  In addition, I still have my mountain bike so the odds are against me… then again, if anybody has the determination to overcome these obstacles, it is me!   Here is what was missed:

  • 9/28 Swim base (:41)
  • 9/29 Tempo bike (:75)
  • 10/1 Swim base + Lactate (:28)
  • 10/2 Foundation run (:55)
  • 10/3 Foundation bike (1:45)
  • And hey, Monday was my day off… ahem….

So with a total of planned workout time of 7 hours and 30 minutes for that week, I ended up just shy of two hours.  That is about 5 hours of missed time.  Yikes!  Today it was time to get back to work and get in the pool.  I had every intention of swimming while in San Diego.  I brought my Speedos, goggles, etc.  The one thing that held me back was that nobody else was swimming in Mission Bay.  Too cold?  Sharks?  Pollution?  I don’t know but I didn’t want to find out so I left it alone.  Here is what was on my schedule for today…. the start of my taper week….

  • WU: 250 @ low aerobic intensity
    • 6 x 25 drills, RI=0:10
  • MS: 9 x 100 @ moderate aerobic intensity, RI=0:05
    • 4 x 25 @ speed intensity, RI=0:20
    • 6 x 25 kick, RI=0:15
  • CD: 250 @ low aerobic intensity

It felt a little odd to be swimming… have not been swimming in over a week. The funny thing is that I felt stronger and faster than I had before! This may be the same feeling I get when I don’t run for a few days…. it feels like I am flying. It is a good feeling but I don’t know if it is really productive. Solid workout, nothing major to report other than the water is starting to get cooler.

I will close out this blog entry on one other concern I have and need to attend to over this next week… my weight.  I was a little careless with my diet while on vacation and I put on quite a few pounds.  I need to shave those pounds off without losing too much muscle mass.  This is going to be a tricky and delicate challenge but I need to take off as much fat mass as possible so that my bike power increases.  A good bike time is crucial to complete my ultimate goal of an under one hour race.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
