Back to training

By Skip

Enough goofing off!  Speaking of which, congratulations to all the Goofy Challenge finishers this weekend.  I will hopefully see you next year for this challenge!  For those of you who do not know what the Goofy Challenge is, well, imagine the insanity of a half marathon on Saturday followed by a full marathon on Sunday.  That’s one way to get your year started off on the right track.

For me, right now, it is time to hit the trail again and hit it strong.  I just got all my data entered into my Training Peaks account for my Escape from Alcatraz race (June 5th) and I was thinking I still had time before I really needed to start things back up again. After all, it has been about a month since my last official race.  Sure I have ran a couple of times in between but certainly not any type of training.

Then, last night, it hit me… I have a half marathon coming up on the 20th of February.  In addition, when I kick my tri training back into full gear, I want to hit the training in motion…. not just statically jump back into things.  Today, I started breaking down how many weeks I have left to train for the 13.1 race and it is not many!  Guess what?  I am going running tonight.

Given that I am about 6 weeks out I did a little research and found two different training plans that could get me there.  Had I kept up with my running for the past month, the advanced training plan would have been just fine.  I am a little worried, at this point, as I think it is a little too much to just jump back into so I am going to start off with an “intermediate” plan and see how I feel after the first week.  If I am still feeling good and injury free I will ramp it up a little bit.  I originally had pretty high expectations for myself when it came to this race but I really, really needed to take a little break.  Not only for the mental and physical aspects of resting but I am still nursing a nagging foot pain that just won’t seem to go away.  You also have to keep in mind that once I start back up, I won’t be stopping until October for tri races and will continue to run train for the Disney Goofy challenge in January next year.  I think you can now understand my reason for a break.

Today I will go out and run 4 to 6 miles depending on how I feel.  I am going out on a 6 mile course but I have a two mile “out” that I could take if things were not going well.  I am also going to just ease into this keeping a nice, even and non-aggressive pace in mind.  Tomorrow starts interval training and that will start things in motion.

I will post my schedule in the next few days so you can see what I am up against.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
