Couch to 5K: Week 8, Day 2

By Skip

Finally got back out on the road this morning.  The ankle was feeling pretty good BUT not 100%.

Here is what I was running this morning…

  • Five-minute warmup
  • Run for 28 minutes
  • Five-minute cooldown

If you compare what I was suppose to do with the screen shot, you will notice that I did not run 28 minutes.  The whole purpose of this is to able to run a 5K, right?  Or should I be running the extra time for endurance?  I am currently stopping when I hit my 5K distance…. maybe I should not be doing that?  A little bit up in the air about that one.  Input from anyone out there would be greatly appreciated!

I was clipping along at a pretty good pace but having a 10 day break DID do it’s toll on me.  I was very winded and really slowed down at the end.  Still a respectable time (for me, anyway) but certainly I have a long ways to go and to get caught up again to where I was before the injury to my ankle.

The discomfort right now almost seems like a muscle pain… maybe that muscle is causing swelling which is causing the ankle pain.  Not really sure.  The good news is that it does not feel as bad as the last time I pushed it a little too much.

Tomorrow is my off day and the hopefully back out on Monday.  I am going to try to get on the stationary bike tomorrow to help re-build my endurance a little bit.  I don’t like being out of breath when I am running…  Also, my heart rate jumped up to the 190’s which is beyond my maximum heart rate for my age.  I used some online calculators and they all told me this number should be 180-181.

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
