Couch to 5K: Week 9, Day 2

Second to last day of training.  I got up this morning to run but had a headache (could it have been the “barrel o’ rum?”) so waited until the afternoon to run.  It was a beautiful day out!  Everything felt fine and had no pain whatsoever.

Here is what the official program was for today:

  • Five-minute warmup
  • Run for 30 minutes
  • Five-minute cooldown

The bad news is that my endurance is just not there.  I was out of breath one minute into the run.  I had pains in my side and wanted to stop running about 3/4 of the time I was out there but kept pushing myself to make it the whole way…. which I did!

The good news is that when I finished, my Nike+ app let me know that I had just run my personal best for the one mile…. Old 1 mile time: 8’11”.  New personal best on the 1 mile is 8’07”.  Some day I will have to run JUST a one mile so that I can REALLY see how fast I can do it.

I have also been going over my daily calorie consumption so the extra few pounds I have put on over the past few days probably does not help with my loss of breath.  It is hard to believe that about a month ago I ran EIGHT miles!  Right now, I can’t imagine doing that.  With only one training day left, I just wish I felt better about finishing this program.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!
