Day 13: Not a lucky day to swim

I had every intention to swim today.  As a matter of fact, my planned day started with a trip down to Miami to watch the first Miami Nice triathlon.  I will be competing in the 2nd one on August 29th.  I wanted to go today and check it out to see the course and experience the triathlon in real time….and of course to scope out the competition 🙂

After that, I had my swim day scheduled.  So I had things all mapped out.  I should have known that the best made plans will go awry.

I got a call last night to help out  with something at church which meant I would be there from 7:30am to about 1:00pm.  They needed my help and I had no problem stepping in to assist.  So much for the Miami Nice competition, however.  When I got out of church I was starved, came home and ate.  Needed a little while to digest and it was about 94 degrees out… a real scorcher!  Had to do a little bit of shopping and go pick up a kick board. I have seen that I am really missing out on this drill during my swim time.

Once we got back home… it was too late to go to the pool because we had to be at an event at 6:30pm.  THIS means that when I got back home I alternated my workouts, once again and did a bike / run brick instead.  I had to move the swim until tomorrow.

Here is what was on my schedule: (afterswitching workouts around)

    • WU: 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
    • MS: 40 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
    • CD: 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
    • MS: Run 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity immediately following today’s bike workout

We did not get home until about 9:30pm.  Since it was too late to go outside and bike I had to do my stationary bike for my one hour workout.  Finished that and ran out the door to do my run.  My wife was in bed by the time I left for the run… it was late!  Let me tell you, it was also really, really hard to motivate myself.  But I convinced myself that I had to do it… my wife thought I was crazy.  By the time I finished everything, did a little strength training and hit the shower, it was after midnight before I put my head on the pillow.

A couple of things I learned from this workout:  You can ALWAYS motivate yourself as long as you keep the big picture in mind.  Second, a 10 year old stationary bike will not give me the kind of statistics I want to see (nor will they be accurate) and finally, I am starting to understand these workouts and why I am progressing the way I am.  I really felt some accomplishment tonight and look forward to tomorrow’s swim (if there is no lightning!)

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!
