Day 23: A good test of my 5k speed

Today was my wife’s birthday.  This meant we had dinner plans after work and I had to do a little adjustment of my schedule.  This was suppose to be my bike day but there is no way I can get my bike workout in before heading to work… unless I bike to work!  After a little dragging and dropping I swapped out with my run as I could do this bright and early. 

I also thought this would be the perfect opportunity to check in on the damage that my triathlon training is causing to my 5K speed.  That meant cutting my scheduled time back a little bit but I have a race coming up and I need to know where I stand.  You know what?  It IS affected!  I had a hard time running today and keeping a consistent pace.  Here is what was on the schedule for those of you playing along: 

  • WU: Run 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • MS: Run 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • CD: Run 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

I know, I am probably complaining for nothing… I have a bigger goal in mind than just these 5K runs, right?  The problem is that I have done so well with them in the past that I have built up some pretty high expectations.  I was once seeing weekly improvements on endurance and time.  Now my muscles are being worked out from every angle and it is taking away from a single discipline, such as running. 

I know that a 7 minute pace is pretty good and some of you want to slap me for even hinting that this is not fast enough.  Here is my problem.  I consider this to be one of my strong points for the triathlon.  I also know that when putting all three sports together, my speed will decrease even further due to the fact that I need to use my legs for other things.  I just don’t want to eat away at the one thing that I thought I had going for me!

One thing that I noticed, if you look at my workout chart above (click the image to see what I mean) I am noticing that my heart rate monitor is quite “sketchy.”  Has this happened to anybody else?  Does this mean that the batter is low?  I need to figure that out ASAP.  When I am working out, it seems to work just fine and I see my status on my Garmin.  It is just when I go to view the data here is when I have issues. 

Anyway, next race, the Freedom 5K on the 26th of June.  Whoohooo… let’s see if I am currently being a whimp or if there is some truth behind the results I am currently seeing.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!
