Day 24: Doing some short hill climbs…. indoors!

By Skip

Wow… motivation factor was waaaaaayyyyyy down today.  I was hoping I would never have this lack of motivation!  We got home late from work so that we did not have heat strokes from the non air conditioned car ride.  By the time we got back it was too late and too dark to hit the road.  I really was not looking forward to this workout anyway.

Watched a little TV, had dinner and by the time I pulled out the stationery bike it was about 10:00pm or so…. what the heck was I thinking?  My wife was looking at me thinking I was crazy but there was noooooo way I was going to slip today.

I had an intersting schedule for today….. hill climbs.  Where do I even find hills in south Florida?

  • WU: 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • MS: 6 x 1-minute hill climbs @ speed intensity with enough recovery to reach total workout time of 55 minutes (including warm-up and cool-down)
  • CD: 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

I ended up doing just fine with this workout as I cranked up the resistance as it came time to do the hill climbs.  Since I was indoors and wearing just a heart rate monitor, there is not much to show.  You can see from the data, however, where I intensified the workout to simulate the 6 hill climbs.  (see the problem with the dropouts in the heart rate monitor again?)

Once I had finished this workout I realized I had yet another problem that I never really had before.  First of all, let me explain that over the past month or so I have been losing more weight than I want to be losing.  As a matter of fact, I DON’T want to lose anymore!  I carefully plan my calories  every day but my training has increased my metabolism, I think.

Now here I am at the end of the day, after dinner, burning off so many calories that I have to try to intake as much as possible before I go to bed!  Not a very good scenario.  Ended up about 1200 calories under budget for the day.  Doing a workout this late also poses the problem of having too much energy before going to bed and not being able to sleep.

All things I need to learn from and try to fix somehow.  In regards to the issues with the calories, does anybody out there have a solution for high calorie, low fat snacks?  I need the calories but not all the other bad stuff that goes along with it!

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
