Day 31: A disastrous way to end the training week

By Skip

All throughout today I was feeling a little foot pain.  I was on my feet most of the day doing lots of walking but still, I had the nagging foot pain that really would not go away.  The little time I was at my desk I took my shoes off just so they could get some rest.  They must have been a little swollen as well because it felt really good to be just in my socks.

Got home and let it cool off a little bit before heading out.  had about 30 minutes planned…. as a matter for fact, this is what was on my to-do list today:

  • WU: Run 5 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • MS: 6 x 30 seconds @ VO2max intensity with enough active recovery to reach total workout time of 30 minutes (including warm-up and cool-down)
  • CD: Run 5 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

I actually went out planning to do my Asafa Powell interval workout as it was about the same type of scenario as my scheduled workout and I really like doing that one.  Something about running to reggae that is so much fun.

About one mile into the run I felt some sharp pains in my right foot… tried to work it out by slowing down a little bit and then I started to feel some knee pain.  I stopped to stretch a little bit and my left hamstring started to hurt.  Both legs?  Come on!  What the heck!  I have been injury free for such a long time now and two days before a race I am going to do myself in?

As you can see from the picture above (click for larger view) I only stopped for a little bit.  I headed back in the other direction and ran a few more short sprints.  I know I probably should not have but I could not imagine coming out here and not getting in some type of a decent workout.

Once I got back I put my knee brace on and started icing up my foot.  I will have to do the same at work tomorrow but it will be more difficult there.

Another thing I was testing today was running multiple apps on my iPhone using iOS4 and seeing what I could get away with.  The race in a couple of days, I have been raising money for a non profit (that I work for) which is the Broward Children’s Center and have told the people donating money that they can watch the race live (via RunMeter on my iPhone) but I also want to capture data from my Nike+ app as I don’t want to lose any miles there.  All seemed good EXCEPT that my Asafa Powell workout did not play properly.  Sure it played the music but NOT the continuous mix with the interaction from Asafa himself.  Maybe I did something wrong when setting it up?  I will have to try it again before I can decide for sure.

One more app I want to get running before race day is an app that will automatically update Twitter and Facebook what music I am currently listening to.  I think this would be another great interaction tool I could add for people donating money… they will be able to see my status, stats, link to a map and the music I am currently listening to.  Just trying to give them more bang for the buck.

See you back here tomorrow for an injury status update, a look back on this last week and what I have coming up.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
