Day 34: Forty miles on the bike and excercise fever?

By Skip

Swapped around my swim and bike days this week.  I need to take advantage of weekend traffic or lack there of.  While I was at church this morning a buddy of mine that got me started in this who triathlon kick to begin with asked if I wanted to ride with him today.  Why not!  That should be a blast.

Did not get out until about 3:00pm…. one of the hottest times to be going on in Florida sun!  Was bout 8 miles to his house so I biked there.  From his house we headed out to some nice quite roads where we could get some speed going.  I quickly learned I did not have nearly the amount of endurance that I thought I had.

The good thing is that my friend let me try out his road bike… what a difference!  I am learning that it is not necessarily the increase of speed that will make the difference, it is the effort your legs put into the biking that will make a difference.  The less energy you spend on biking the more energy you will have for the run.  He also loaned me a pair of his biking shoes… now I need to go out and find pedals that will work with these shoes and my bike.  I will be able to get full use out of my biking stroke.  That alone should make a big difference.

By the time I headed home I had NOTHING left in my legs.  It was a very big struggle just to make it all the way.  However, in the back of my mind I knew that when I completed this little trek out today I will have completed 40 miles…. the most I have ever biked in one stretch.

When I got back home I was exhausted.  My skin was covered in chalky white dried salt from sweating.  Took a shower and felt a little better BUT I also felt like I had a fever.  This happened one other time to me when I went out and ran a 7 miles in the middle of the day, just for the heck of it, and came back home feeling the same way.

I believe it has something to do with hydration.  Anybody else experienced this?  Solution for me?  I know, how about not going out in 100 degree weather, right?

Feverishness could also be sunburn. If you sweated that much, you may have lost your sunscreen protection. Cycling is murder on the skin because the breeze cools off your skin, stopping you from feeling the burn as you get a UV roasting.

I am pretty sure I was just dehydrated… No sunburn afterwards. I kept hydrated but I guess it was not enough. One heck of a workout!

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
