Day 37: It’s not how you train, it is what you wear!
Ok, so I am going over the top a little here but let me tell you, it has a lot of truth to it. I have two stories to tell, let me begin with today….
So I went out and bought myself a pair of Speedos today. They are the longer style but Speedos none the less. I have several friends reading this that will laugh at me right now and are probably composing an email to tease me about my purchase. I knew I had to be more streamlined in the water and did not want to wear my tri shorts as they had warning labels all over them about chlorine destroying the fabric. Needless to say I didn’t want to throw good money down the tube.
When I jumped in the water and did my warmup lap I noticed how quickly I was moving through the water. I was anxious to try my main set…… 30-45 seconds off and it was not as much of a struggle!! Talking about going about this the hard way! This was a great feeling today and I finally felt like I might be able to compete in a triathlon with my swim. Keep in mind, I won’t be in any swimming meet specific races anytime soon, but a tri race? Bring it on!
The other story about clothing I was going to mention is that a couple of weeks a go I was running a race and a guy came up to me and said “I took one look at you and knew you were the guy to watch out for and beat.” Good thing he didn’t say that to me before the race or my head would have swollen and I wouldn’t have been able to cross through the finish line arches 🙂
The first case I pointed out was a performance issue… an OBVIOUS performance issue. I knew it would make a difference when I switched, I just didn’t realize how much. The second case I pointed out was an intimidation issue. I had my tri shorts on that day and a slick racing shirt. If you look the part people will assume you ARE the part. Not that I am out there to intimidate anybody but if they mentally psyche themselves out and I cross that finish line before them all because it was something I wore? Game on!
I almost forgot to list what was on my workout schedule for today:
- WU: 250 @ low aerobic intensity
- 6 x 25 drills, RI=0:10
- MS: 9 x 100 @ moderate aerobic intensity, RI=0:05
- 6 x 25 kick, RI=0:15
- CD: 250 @ low aerobic intensity

Do not take any crap about wearing the Speedos (especially the long ones)! I did the same thing after my first swim workout, and the difference is amazing.
