Day 41: More fireworks than I can handle

First and foremost, happy Fourth of July everybody!  There are a lot of races going on this weekend…. if you are one of those racing, good luck!  I will not be out competing as I need to concentrate on training.  Today is no exception and is an excellent day to had out on a bike / run brick. 

Tried to get going a little bit earlier but got a late start.  I had a route in my head but by the time I started going and got about 1 mile into my ride, I could see a thunderstorm in front of me complete with lots of lightning.  That meant I had to adjust things today and do it rather quickly.  I really didn’t want to waste an hour and a half bike workout just aimlessly riding around.  I came up with a plan and carried on. 

The bike workout consisted of: 

  • WU: 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • MS: 1 hour and 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • CD: 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

Found a nice quite stretch of road that I was able to work on some speed drills and cardio.  After getting bored with that I headed out kind of in the direction of home.  I had about 20 minutes left and the sky opened up and SOAKED me!  I actually had to pull over because I could not see in front of me it was coming down so hard.  Trust me, I am not afraid of a little rain but at this point I was worried that cars would not be able to see me and I would be putting myself in danger.  At first it felt great… it was a nice and cold rain but after a while, it was more fireworks than I could handle.

I waited about 15 minutes and it let up enough to head back home.  I was not finished when I got home, I had a run planned as well.  The follow up transition run was: 

  • MS: Run 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity immediately following today’s bike workout

Ok, easy enough… but try to do that with 10 extra pounds of water drenched clothes and shoes.  Okay, I am sure it was not 10 pounds but it sure felt like it.  I kept my wet shoes on because I didn’t want to get my good running shoes wet as well.  Since it was only a 10 minute run I figured it would not matter that much.

Kept a nice little easy pace.  I felt really, really good, even when I came directly off the bike.  Hopefully this is due to conditioning and not the fact that I took a 15 minute break while it was raining.  I could have ran faster but you know what, it felt good for what it was.  Tomorrow is the run AND my day off (from work, that is)

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!
