Day 43: Keeping my head down and my butt up

By Skip

Boy, with a title like that what was I doing?  Running?  Well, that would make for odd form!  Biking?  I guess if I had a tri bike that might be proper… but then again I just biked yesterday.  You guessed it, it was  my swim day today 🙂

I really didn’t think I would get my swim in today.   About 2:00pm the sky started to get dark and it threatened to storm.  As we drove home it sprinkled just a little bit but I knew that as long as there was no lightning they would not close the pool.  I am glad I went because it turned out to be a great night to swim.

Here is the workout:

  • WU: 250 @ low aerobic intensity
    • 6 x 25 drills, RI=0:10
  • MS: 10 x 100 @ moderate aerobic intensity, RI=0:05
    • 6 x 25 kick, RI=0:15
  • CD: 250 @ low aerobic intensity

When I got there, the lane next to me was a man that swam even slower than me.  Actually, I shouldn’t say that about myself.  I am getting much better.  As a matter of fact, today I concentrated on a section of my form that helped my glide through the water much better.  And that is to keep my head further down in the water which caused my butt to lift up.  Not perfect but I am getting there and feeling my body more in the water and I am becoming the water….. so zen like!

Anyway, got to my main sets of 10×100 and concentrated on the :05 interval time.  I understand what they are trying to do so I kept things nice and easy and I had no problem, whatsoever completing those main sets.

The bike ride there and back was uneventful… my legs are a little sore.  Actually I should tell you that I bought some of that “Ironman” creme that they are selling now for muscle soreness… you know what I am talking about, right?  Actually, I bought the gel and used it for the first time yesterday after my run.  My lower leg was aching quite a bit so I rubbed some of that on.  It did help as I am not sore today but boy, that stuff is very strong on the nose!  More so than some of the other cremes that are available.

In all fairness, I did also rub some Tiger Balm on it as well so I am not sure exactly which is the one to compliment on its effectiveness.  I’ll let you know when I test it out some more.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
