Day 45: The meal that destroyed the run

I knew not to do this but I made the mistake.   Here is how it went down….  

Got home from work at about 5:30 and it was still really, really hot outside.  I was hungry so we decided to have dinner, I would wait a couple of hours and let the food digest and give the sun time to set and cool things off.  The second part of that statement happened but not the digesting of the food.  We had leftover Chinese food and AWESOME peach cobbler that my wife made yesterday.  It was a Paula Dean recipe and I found out it had a stick of butter and two cups of sugar….. ahhhh… not exactly in my training plan diet 🙂  

Before I get too far into this story, this is what I DID NOT accomplish tonight:  

  • WU: Run 5 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • MS: 8 x 30 seconds @ VO2max intensity with enough active recovery to reach total workout time of 35 minutes (including warm-up and cool-down)
  • CD: Run 5 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

I was only 10 minutes into the run and I started to get stomach cramps.  After my first sprint I could barely walk.  As a matter of fact, that is what I did…. walk.  I forced myself to start running again and then did a couple more sprints.  After about 2.5 miles into the run I just could not continue no matter how hard I tried.

This is an important day to remember.  If I ever think that it does not matter what I eat before a race day, I shall remember the stomach cramps from today.  Eat properly, and give your body time to digest the food.  

Looking into the future, this would ruin not only race day but I see this as a ruined day of training.  Considering I have some crazy days ahead of me, I really did not need a bad workout today.  

The good news is that my shoes felt pretty good today, meaning no blisters.  There was one odd thing, it seemed like my shoes were “sloshing” a little bit… just my left shoe.  I could not figure it out… almost like the gel inside the front portion of the shoe was sloshing around.  Maybe I was just hallucinating, I don’t know.   I will let you know more as I learn more.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!
