Day 46: Gas fumes and swimming don’t mix

By Skip

I headed to the pool this morning…. took the day off because I am headed out later with a couple of my friends and we are going to celebrate our 40th birthdays together.  So I figured I had better get my workout in…. I will probably consuming extra calories this weekend.

When I got to the pool, it was pretty quiet…. not too many people there at this hour.  Found a land and got started.  The only probably I had was that they were vacuuming the bottom of the pool and the machine they were using was gasoline driven.  Every time I came up for a breath of air I got a lung full of gasoline exhaust fumes….  Not really the ideal experience.

On my morning schedule was:

  • WU: 250 @ low aerobic intensity
    • 6 x 25 drills, RI=0:10
  • MS: 5 x 200 @ threshold intensity, RI=0:20
    • 6 x 25 kick, RI=0:15
  • CD: 250 @ low aerobic intensity

Felt good in the water today.  I am “gliding” more as I move through the water which is a really nice feeling.  I still don’t think I know what it is to feel threshold capacity or V02 max in the pool….. run, yes. Bike, yes. Swim, no.

Kept a close eye on my rest intervals so that I can build that overall endurance…. I am getting there!   Other than that, there is not much to report on this morning.  Everything went as planned and in continued to keep my head down and butt up (more of a straight line with my body) and that is what helped with the gliding.  Also concentrated on my kicks a little more which helped with some of the speed as well.

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
