Day 50: Swimming a straight 800

By Skip

Today was the first time I got in the pool and swam enough distance that would be comparable to what I will be swimming on August 15th.  I have wondered how I would do but really had no idea other than to calculate times from what I had swam in shorter lengths and make the mathematical adjustments.

I got to the pool and some of the longer lanes were open today so I grabbed one.  This usually means (and it did this time as well) that I would adjust my swim distances based upon lap distances.  Below is what was on my agenda (in yards) and in red is what I actually did:

  • WU: 250 @ low aerobic intensity (300 meters)
    • 6 x 25 drills, RI=0:10 (2 x 100 meters)
  • MS: 8 x 100 @ moderate aerobic intensity, RI=0:05 (800 meters with no RI)
    • 6 x 25 kick, RI=0:15 (2 x 50 meters)
  • CD: 250 @ low aerobic intensity (300 meters)

So I did my main set non stop with no rest interval.  Quite honestly, I could have gone much further, however there was no point, really.  August 15th I will be swimming 750 meters so I really need to increase my training distance right now, just speed!  I look at some of the other people in the pool and I am really amazed at what I see.  As soon as I get a few more sponsors I will hire a swimming coach… one that understands triathlons, of course.

I am actually excited to do my first open water swim… an un-interrupted training session that will REALLY be different than what I am used to.  I am also going to do this in a group so I can get practice getting kicked in the head 🙂

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
