Day 51: Making sense of my workout routine

By Skip

The lightbulb started to glow brighter today.  Sometimes when you are on a training program you begin to question why you are doing, well, what you are doing!  Then, there becomes a point where you start to see the big picture.  It becomes clear why you are on the path that you are.  Today was that day.

This was my routine for today:

  • WU: 13 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • MS: 2 x 12 minutes @ threshold intensity with 10 minutes active recovery
  • CD: 13 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

I ended up on the perfect bike route, just by luck as it was previously unexplored territory for me.  However it had a really nice long stretch that I was able to get some good workouts for my main sets.  I realized that over the next 30 days if I can combine these two main sets into a solid 24 minutes of sprint biking that this should cover my entire biking distance on August 15th.  If I can keep up that kind of power the entire way, that is one more area of the triathlon I will be comfortable with…. now if I could only get that darn swim down!

On a side and funny note, when I came home my wife wanted to know what happened to me because I looked like I had polka dotsall over me….. I was covered with bugs from head to toe.  It was a rural area I was in and there were “clouds” of bugs I was biking through…. Who needs GU Chomps when you can get that kind of protein by licking your arms :)

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
