Day 52: Building my run with 30 days left and Garmin issues

By Skip

Went out running this morning.  It was a little humid but I really wanted to get out there in the morning instead of coming home from work and trying to squeeze it in before dinner.  It is usually really hot when I get home so morning really is best.

Here is what was on my agenda for today:

  • WU: Run 10 minutes @ low aerobic intensity
  • MS: Run 16 minutes @ threshold intensity
  • CD: Run 10 minutes @ low aerobic intensity

I had one major problem today that probably screwed up my overall time, even though I know I am not racing anybody here…. I want every workout to count, however.  I don’t want to just breeze through one of the workout days without feeling like I accomplished something.

The problem I had was that I had bad stomach cramps.  I almost had to stop several times to try to catch my breath and let the cramps go away.  I forged ahead anyway.

I tried to keep my threshold set at 6’30 or faster but I could not maintain it.  I also realized that since I live in “tree city” that it probably accounts for quite a bit of my Garmin GPS inaccuracy.  Also, if you look at the below graphic of my workout, you will notice that the altitude information is all wrong…. don’t know what is going on there.  By the way, take a look at my heart rate… I don’t think so!  So there is something wrong I need to keep an eye on.

I think I have enough things going on with my data that I might call Garmin to see if there is some known issues.  Maybe there is a recent firmware upgrade that I am missing out on… who knows?

Also, just an update, my shoes are feeling better but I don’t think I would get another pair of them.  My feet do not feel as comfortable as when I wore my Nike shoes.  Those just felt like they were an extension of me… the Brook shoes feel like a pair of shoes that always remind me that they are there.  I feel like I have to constantly make running adjustments to avoid pain that builds up in different areas of my foot.

Having said that, this is the second time I have been out running without music and things like adjusting your stride and paying very close attention to signs that you body is trying to give you is a very big check mark in the “plus column.”

I know you are still waiting for that big announcement I was going to make but you will have to wait a couple more days… maybe by the time the weekend rolls around.

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
