Day 54: To kill a mockingbird…. not today!

Today was an unusual day.  It started off as a regular day, heading to the pool to get my swim workout in before afternoon thunderstorms.  As I rounded the final stretch on my bike ride to the pool I noticed a little bird in the middle of a busy intersection that must have recently damaged his (her?) leg.  At first I just headed down the road, continuing towards my final destination but I couldn’t get that bird out of my head so I did a U turn and headed back to the intersection. 

I parked my bike on the side of the road and rushed out into oncoming traffic.  It took me a few attempts to get the bird off the road because he was fighting me and his / her mate was flying in my direction and kept attacking me.  I pretty much stopped traffic scooted the bird until I was able to get him to the side of the road near the bushes where he could heal without being smooshed by oncoming traffic. 

Wow, dramatic start so far!  Got back on my bike, arrived at the pool and there was a swim meet going on and there was no way I was going to be able to get my workout in today.  Got back on my bike and headed home.  

Once back in front of the computer, I looked on my calendar and moved things around a bit.  I ended up swapping with a brick workout I had planned the next day.  Boy, this has been the week of swapping workouts around!  

My brick workout consisted of: 

  • MS: Bike 45 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • Run 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

This was the run portion of the brick. I felt really fast today! If you notice I ran a pace of 6’47” average for this AFTER my 45 minute bike! I know it was only for ten minutes but I really get it now and triathlon training is NOT going to hurt my times!

Good solid day of workouts.  What started off as a potential non productive day ended up being a VERY productive day.  And after looking back, that extra bike ride was worth it today and I was meant to do that…. and I expect that bird to mock me no more!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!
