Day 68: Killer heat makes for a mediocre run

By Skip

Running in extreme weather conditions is never advised.  I have read about it, I have head horror stories and yet I let myself get caught up in “my schedule” today.  After all the shuffling around this week, I was going to try to squeeze two workouts in.  My missed 40 minute run and then a bike/run brick.  Simple enough, right?  Nope.

First of all, I did not get motivated to get out there until about 10:30am so it had started to heat up already.  Here, to the right, is an actual screen shot from my iPhone at the time of my run.  Not a pretty sight.  No matter how much you try to stay hydrated, it just does not work.  About half way through I knew that I was not going be to able to do my brick following this run.

It was a tough run today.  The heat slowed my main set down quite a bit.  Once again, poor planning kept me from an optimal workout.  With just two weeks left before my race, I am trending towards a bad outcome.

Here was my workout for today:

  • WU: Run 10 minutes @ low aerobic intensity
  • MS: Run 20 minutes @ threshold intensity
  • CD: Run 10 minutes @ low aerobic intensity

If you notice, my heart rate is not accurate in this graph… once again, something is either going on with my Garmin or my heart rate monitor.   This kind of threw me off during my main set.  I can’t say I saw the big numbers that I am seeing in this chart BUT I was seeing numbers around 200-201 and I had not worked that hard.  Since I knew it was probably due to the heat, I had to slow the last part of my main set WAY down.  My HR monitor strap is getting a little worn and ragged so I will have to order up a new strap this next week.  I also need to replace the battery in it.  Maybe I shouldn’t do that myself?  Is it advised not to?  After all, I will be going in the water with it during my race.  The only reason why I ask is because I have a dive watch that I took to a local jewelry store one time to have the battery replaced.  Needless to say, they didn’t seal it properly seal and the watched failed after about 15 feet.  I had to eventually replace the entire watch.

I will just bump my brick and do it tomorrow.  It is suppose to cool down this week (cool down, as in cooler than 95 degree heat) so hopefully I will get back on track and caught up sooner or later.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
