Day 69: Don’t be a mamby pamby

By Skip

As I reach the official two week mark, all I can think about is that by this time, 14 days from now, I will have  completed (fingers crossed) my first triathlon.  I know this day and this event will be my new addiction.  It is different training for something that you only have a concept about and training to become better and become more competitive.

Today really was no different than yesterday when it comes to heat.  The main difference is that I had no “threshold” activity planned.  That really is huge.  The point is that I am not going to let myself wimp out and not complete what I am set out to do.  No room for a “mamby pamby” in a triathlon, right?   This is what was on my agenda today:

  • MS: Bike 45 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • Run 15 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

I had a 45 minute bike ride planed as part of my brick.   It was a nice Sunday morning but it was still very hot.  I headed out on my usual path and was able to keep a non-stop bike routine going.  Just a few major intersections stopped me for a few minutes.  This allowed me to keep my speed up and I really did not let up.  I concentrated on staying hydrated as I knew I had a 15 minutes run after this bike.  I also concentrated on not killing my legs in the last 3-5 minutes or so.  I need to practice my dismount with clip-on shoes as it would be easy to get accidentally stuck.

Next up was my run.   I was pretty happy with my pace, however I think I could do better.  It was pretty hot out there again today so I know that affected my heart rate and my pace.  I did not start this run until about 12:00pm which means the sun was at full intensity.  Overall, I was very pleased and hope I can continue to build on this over the next two weeks.

So, looking ahead to this upcoming week, I am hoping to get my open water swim in tomorrow.. finally!  Maybe even one more next Monday as well.  My planning failed me a little bit as I scheduled myself next Sunday for another activity instead of taking advantage of a tri group that practices a full swim / bike / run workout.   One of the reasons why I have not taken advantage of this before is due to transportation.  I drive a 67 Mustang and I have yet to get a bike rack.  As a matter of fact, I am a little hesitant to get a bike rack for my car!

When it comes to my first race, I will have a rental car for that weekend so I am not overly concerned.  Are bike racks very specific of the car that you drive?  I hope not or this might throw a little bit of a loophole in my planning.

Another loophole that I have to figure out is the day before the race (actually, the night before) I am going to a Miami Dolphins game as we are new season ticket holders and there is NO WAY I am going to miss that game.  That puts me home at about 12:00am so I will only be getting a couple hours of sleep that night.

After today I am going to cut back on the alcohol and caffeine as I head into the final stretch.  It shall be interesting to make some more major life changes and see how my body adjusts to them.

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
