Day 7: Running while dehydrated is not good

Being Memorial day I was able to take all the time I needed today to get ready for a run.  I swapped my days off as today was suppose to be my assigned day off…. I had some parties to go to this weekend and yesterday, by the time I got out from church, it was way to hot to run.  Or at least that is what I convinced myself of.

The party last night was great… good food, good drinks with good friends and had a really good time.  The problem is that I ate WAAYYYY too much, I drank WAAYYYY too much and I even smoked a cigar…. boy was I off of my training schedule or what!

Let’s just say that when I got up this morning, or tried, should I say, I was able to get to the Advil, wash it down with some Gatorade and head back to bed to wait for the headache to subside.  FINALLY it went away and I got up only to find myself extremely dehydrated.  I ended up drinking about 48 ounces of fluid in addition to coffee (dumb) before I went out.  Heck, by that time it was about 9:30 or so and was already hot out… it is south Florida after all.

Started running and all felt good but suddenly, less than a mile into the run I realized how dehydrated I really was!  I already had cotton mouth… that was not a good feeling and not a good sign.  This run was a real struggle for me which concerns me about the race I have to run on this Saturday.  With all the triathlon training I am doing, I only have one more running workout day before the race, which I will do an interval run.  I feel slightly under prepared for this one for some reason.  I am going to adjust my schedule again to make room for the race and putting my rest day on Friday so I can have some fresh legs.

After looking at my stats I was a little surprised as to how well I did.  I would be happy if I could do that on Saturday but I REALLY wanted to do a 20′ or less run…. I really don’t think that is going to happen!  It would be a miracle if I did that.

This is what was originally planned for me today:

  • WU: Run 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • MS: Run 5 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • CD: Run 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

Once again, pretty generic so I am sticking to my own running scheme for right now.  Once again I am a little concerned that I am only running 20 minutes instead of the recommended 25 minutes.  I should really try to run 25 minutes at my race pace to see if I can maintain it for an additional 5 minutes.  I don’t think I can but it would be worth a try.

I just hope that these days leading up to the race I will be able to purge some of the bad things I did to my body over the weekend.  It is funny how these foods / habits effect your body so quickly.  Oh, by the way, I put on 5 pounds over these past two days as well…. not good!
