Day 71: Hello legs! Where have you been?

By Skip

Finally I felt a level of comfort in the pool that I have not felt for a very long time.  This made for a very nice solid workout today!  I was totally relaxed and focused.  Maybe the focusing was the cause for the relaxation…. hard to tell.  It was nice and cool outside as well so that might have been a factor as well.

I played around with my form a little bit and noticed I might not be turning/rotating my hips as much as I should.  I experimented and found that I had a longer reach on my stroke as I twisted more.  I have to be careful about playing around with my form too much at this point.

Here was my swim workout for today which I was able to stick to due to the shorter lane I was in:

  • WU: 250 @ low aerobic intensity
    • 6 x 25 drills, RI=0:10
  • MS: 11 x 100 @ moderate aerobic intensity, RI=0:05
    • 6 x 25 @ speed intensity, RI=0:20
    • 6 x 25 kick, RI=0:15
  • CD: 250 @ low aerobic intensity

By the way, hello legs!  I forgot you were back there!  Once I remembered that, I had some serious power going on.  I can’t forget to use them more but not too much…. That will be the trick.  Keep in mind I was using them today in very short spurts during the 6×25 during my main set.  They added a lot of power but I have to be careful about overusing them.

I am already starting to feel the muscle pain from this week.  This has been the most intense week thus far.  Next on my schedule is a bike ride with a couple of threshold intensity drills built into it.  I will be looking forward to my rest day on Monday and my taper week next week!

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
