Day 78: Heading into calmer waters – from OW to Pool

What a difference a day makes.  What a difference your training conditions make!  Yesterday’s open water swim was a bigger challenge than I was expecting and quite an eye opener.  Already, I regret that I have not had enough time doing open water training.  There is no question in my mind that this will affect my overall time on Sunday.  Not a huge hurdle for me, however.  As long as I can get through it I know what to work on for the race after that.

I am now officially into my taper week and I have noticed that today begins the lighter workout load:

  • WU: 250 @ low aerobic intensity
    • 6 x 25 drills, RI=0:10
  • MS: 9 x 100 @ moderate aerobic intensity, RI=0:05
    • 4 x 25 @ speed intensity, RI=0:20
    • 6 x 25 kick, RI=0:15
  • CD: 250 @ low aerobic intensity

This is a welcome change to what I have been doing….. it was just as much distance as I had been doing in the past but it was much more relaxed.   First of all, I had to call the pool to see if they were even open because it had rained all day and the entire drive home from work.  They told me as long as there was no lightning that they would remain open… so off to the pool I headed.  All the lanes were converted to short lanes today so I was able to stick to my game plan. 

I could not ride my bike to the pool, or at least I decided not to, as the rain and the “slicks” on my bike do not really make a good combination.  I have been caught out in the rain before with the slicks on and almost lost it a few times.   That is one thing I DO NOT need before Sunday… a stupidity injury!

The workout went well and I am glad I squeezed this one in.  The only thing notable from today’s workout is that I did a couple of the main sets breathing to my opposite side.  This is due to the face I was looking at the course map and I will have to sight to my left the entire time and I am not really good at breathing on that side.  It was actually very tiring, for some reason.

Tomorrow will be a challenge as I have a commitment after work that will affect what I do…. It will be late by the time I get home so I will have to do my scheduled bike ride indoors OR swap my bike with my run.  Not quite sure what I will do.  I guess I will see how I feel when I get home.  One thing is for certain… I WILL NOT AND CAN NOT SKIP TOMORROW’S WORKOUT!
