Do cramps slow you down or make you stop?

By Skip

This is a question I had to ask myself today.  I have had cramps before…. muscle cramps, hydration cramps, food cramps, you name it, I have had it.  When this happens you have a couple of options.  Before I get into that, let’s look at what got me going today…..

My agenda consisted of:

  • WU: Run 10 minutes @ Pace Zone 2 (Low Aerobic)
  • MS: 4 x 3 minutes @ Pace Zone 8 (VO2max) w/ 3-minutes recoveries @ Pace Zone 2
  • CD: Run 10 minutes @ Pace Zone 2

I started strong but when I finished my 2nd set in the main set and was on my recovery period, I started to get stomach cramps. That greatly affected round 4 and the recovery cool down period.  If you look at my splits below you will see where I started to slow down.  It really was bad enough that I probably should have stopped and just called it a day but that is not what I am made out of.

Just for my OWN reference, I had some beef jerky and orange, low-calorie Gatorade before I went out on this run, I don’t think it was any of those food choices but I thought I should mention it in case it happens again I might be able to track it back to a certain food.  I did this run after work, as usual and the previously mentioned food and drink is the only think I had put into my system since lunch.  I had no signs that I would feel like this before I headed out… it just hit me!

So, I was not able to put 100% into this workout but it was a testament to my determination….. it was either “get through it” or “quit”….. the option was clear!

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
