Double-Up Saturday

By Skip

Looking back, it is kind of interesting to see I am repeating patterns before the last two races.  As it gets closer to race day I mentally convince myself that I can take extra days off and double-up on my workout days.  I am glad I am my own coach because I think if I had a real coach he or she would not be happy with me.

It all started off with the bike:

  • WU: 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • MS: 1 hour and 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • CD: 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

Headed on a nice long route that I knew would consume most of the training schedule for the day.  I was out about two hours with actual riding time of 1 hour and 40 minutes or so.  The wind was very strong (thanks to Igor) but luckily it was blowing in an eastward direction.  98 percent of my route was North / South so I was good and was able to keep about a 20 mph average.   There was one stretch that I went East to West and back again.  In the westward direction I got up to 30 mph.  On the way back East, I was averaging about 13 mph.  I told you it was a strong breeze!

I was pretty tired when I finished but I knew it was probably due to a little dehydration and lack of nutrition even though I had brought plenty of fluids and GU….. it was just plain hot out!  I stayed home for about an hour to cool off, drank some fluids and had some lunch.  Once I felt better I headed back out on the bike and steered my way towards the pool.

Here was my VO2max pool workout for the day:

  • WU: 250 @ low aerobic intensity
    • 6 x 25 drills, RI=0:10
  • MS: 7 x 75 @ VO2max intensity, RI=0:30
    • 6 x 25 kick, RI=0:15
  • CD: 250 @ low aerobic intensity

It was a solid swim workout. I really had to push hard to get this one at VO2 max capacity as it followed my 2 hour bike ride. I made sure I stayed at my 30 second RI for the main set. Had the heart rate up quite high.

I still need to work on a faster stroke.  From everything I have read about triathlon specific swimming recently, I am overstretching on my stoke as well.  I need get a coach and to spend time and money on this area of my training.  The sooner the better as have to stop practicing the wrong way….. remember that practice does not make perfect…

Garmin Update:

I heard back from customer support at Garmin about my premium heart rate monitor.  They suggested that I replace the battery (which was the first thing I did when I first started having problems.)  They also admitted that there might be something be wrong with it and they had sent out a replacement….. WOW!  I had not even asked for a replacement… they just did it!  Either they have had many problems with these in the past or Garmin just rocks!  I think maybe it is some of each.

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
