Finally feeling like I am a runner again

By Skip

Today was good.  Today was very good.  I woke up with my knee feeling 100% which was AWESOME considering what I have been going through.  I knew that once I started pounding the pavement, however, it would not feel 100% anymore….. and I was correct.   By the time I had finished, it was feeling 90%.  I can take that!

The most exciting part of it is that I was able to maintain about a 7:00 pace and I was able to hold it for the entire 5 miles.  That was on my list today; 5 mile run (I wanted to maintain a 7:30-8:00 min pace) plus six 100 meter strides.  I finished and I finished strong, which I was not expecting.

Looking at my training schedule, I have really picked this thing up right in the middle of the schedule.  What the heck was I thinking all this time??  I am at a crossroads of picking an intermediate or an advanced training plan.  I think I have no choice but to go the intermediate route as tomorrow’s advanced plan calls for 15 miles while the intermediate plan calls for 10 miles.  Given it is suppose to be a nice easy pace but I have never run 15 miles before in one stretch so I think this is a no-brainer at this point.  Intermediate it is.  Maybe in the next few weeks I might be able to transition over if my recovery goes better than expected.

Additionally, a few days ago I thought that there was no way I would be able to accomplish my 13.1 time goal that I was originally shooting for.  After today, well, I am back in the frame of mind that I can do it.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
