First day back and I am injury-prone

By Skip

Yesterday I headed back out on the running trail, as planned.  Actually I was excited to take my wife out on her first run!  She has made the decision to also start a “Couch to 5k” plan and I will be guiding her along the way.  I used her first day out as my warm-up back into things and edge me back into my own running plan.  Let me start off by saying she did a great job for never really running before.  She is doing the same plan as I did when I first started, the main difference being is that she has somebody watching over her and holding her back.  I wish I would have had somebody like that when I started so that I would have corrected my mistakes before I injured myself.

Speaking of injury, I finished my “warm-up” with her and as we were cooling down and walking back home she said to me “is that your shoe making that noise?”  I realized that I was slapping my foot on the ground (just my right foot) in a way that was not normal.  I kind of brushed it off for the time being, dropped her off and headed out for a 6 mile jaunt across town.

By the time I hit mile 4 I realized that my knee was feeling a little strange.  By mile 6, I was actually in pain and it was hard for me to finish… that’s right, I set out to do 6.2 miles and I was not going to stop until I had finished!  So much for all of the restraint I learned last year, right?

Anyway, by the time I hobbled home, I could barely walk.  My knee felt like it was swollen and I immediately applied ice to it when I got back.  I started to analyze what had gone wrong and then it dawned on me.  Remember that odd sound my shoe was making?  Well, I realized that I was compensating for that nagging foot injury / pain that I have been dealing with and won’t go away.  Subconsciously I must have been compensating for that and it caused my knee to twist over time and distance.

So here I am a day later hobbling around with a pretty ambitious workout schedule in front of me.  I won’t be able to run tonight so I will have to try to nurse it back to health and try to start over again, this time paying attention to what my feet are doing. By the time the season had finished last year I was so comfortable with my running style that things became automatic.  I hate to see what type of condition my swim and bike form are in.

I can see that I have quite a bit to achieve before next month’s race and my first triathlon.  Who’s with me this year?  By the way, I don’t think I will really post any numbers or data charts until I have something to show…. Unless you want to see them.  For sure I will be posting my stats when I get back into triathlon training!

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
