Going strong and then going flat… literally!

By Skip

Today’s bike ride started off like any other.  I headed out after work conscious of how much sunlight I had left.  As I got about 15 minutes into this 45 minute workout, I heard a “crunch” and looked back to see I had just went over a bunch of glass.  My tire started to immediately make that familiar noise but I was hoping I was just hallucinating… nope… just a couple of seconds later the rear tire was completely flat.

This is what I was suppose to do today:

  • WU: 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • MS: 25 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • CD: 10 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

Took me a good 10 minutes of work and some bloody knuckles before I got the tire swapped out.   Good thing I still had a spare tube from last year and a CO2 cartridge handy.  I need to replace these ASAP so I am prepared for the next time.  I also really should be carrying two tubes on these runs in case both of the tires go flat.

By the time I had changed the tire I started losing light so I only went a little bit further before heading back.  Unfortunately I could not make up for lost time on this workout.  Also, my tire was quite wobbly but I didn’t want to stop in heavy traffic to fix it, I just wanted to get back home.  I knew as soon as I got back I had to go for a short run, which brings me to…….

Time to head out for my wife’s C25K training.  A nice little “mini-brick” and boy did I forget how that really felt!  She did good, however struggled with her first 8 minute stretch of continuous running.  Looking back I also remember this was a struggle for me.  On Friday she has to do her first 20 minutes of continuous running and that is freaking her out a little bit.  However, she will have me by her side so I will make sure she gets through it with flying colors!

No knee pain… tomorrow I am heading out for a 6 mile run to see how things feel.  I need to build up some leg endurance before the half marathon on the 20th…. I still am not quite sure how I am going to get through that.

About

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
