How to derail a workout… Every day counts!

Biking is usually one of my “given” workouts where I just go out there, do it and stick to the plan.  Today did not really pan out that way, for some reason.  I am not sure if it was a motivation issue, nutrition issue or what.  In any case, when I finished I reflected a little bit and was not happy with what I accomplished…. or should I say, didn’t accomplish.

Here was my schedule:

  • WU: 21 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity
  • MS: 24 minutes @ threshold intensity
  • CD: 20 minutes @ moderate aerobic intensity

As you can see from the main set, this was a pretty important workout today.  With only 3 and a half weeks left before the race, those threshold workouts are key to building race intensity.  I guess I am more concerned because I was looking over my schedule and had to adjust quite a few days of training due to some business trips I have coming up.  This caused me to make more modifications to my schedule than I was hoping for.

As I got about 1/4 of the way through my main set I got a phone call that I had to take.  In turn, I had to place another phone call… lost about 4-5 minutes right in the MIDDLE of the workout.  In addition, I took a route where the road I was on I was able to do 4 minute stretches of continuous biking but the road was also busy so at the end of each leg I had to wait for cars to pass and each time I felt like I was resting too much.

The point is that I missed the key to this workout: Threshold

That is why I was disappointed in myself today.
