My final thoughts before the real work begins

By Skip

Today is officially my last rest day that I will be ache free. Starting tomorrow I will be at a whole new level of exercise.  As I look at my overwhelming workout calendar in TrainingPeaks I pause to reflect as to how I got to this point.

The year started off wanting to be healthier and my ultimate goal was to get through a 5K on my 40th birthday.  I did all of the above however I realized at about mid April that I could not only complete my 3.1 miles, I could actually compete within my age bracket.  Both races that I have competed in to date I have come in first in my age group.

My next 5K race is on June 5th and I expect no less… especially after some of the times I have been practicing at.  Having said that I am probably setting myself up for a fall as there will be that guy in his 40’s I will come up against that will run it in 16 or 17 minutes and kick my butt.  BUT if my luck holds up, they will get bumped up into the masters category.  Boy would I like to make THAT list!

As I look ahead there are two important things to remember:  Stick to the game plan and don’t get distracted.  Either one could derail me from my ultimate goal of my first triathlon on August 15th.  Remember, I don’t only want to COMPLETE this race, I want to COMPETE in this race!   Since I will be doing my first one (or two) with a mountain bike with slicks on it, I want people to say “not only did he do well but he did it with that heavy bike!”

So today I will relish in relaxation (and work) and just think about what it is that lies in front of me.  Exhaustion, soreness, grueling workouts and most importantly, PURE EXHILARATION!

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
