My First Brick

OK, so I have been convincing myself not to push myself too far and stay focused…. I just COULD NOT RESIST!  It is out of my training program (then again, what the heck IS my training program?)

Always heard about doing a brick so thought I would give it a try to see what it was really like?  I mean, how had can it be?  Right????

Set out on a 10 mile bike ride.  The route I choose was on major roads but with my new bike helmet on I would be invincible…not!  Let’s just say that it was a very, very scary ride.  Had a very strong headwind as well so when I got to the last two miles it was a tough ride.  In addition it started to rain a little bit.  Normally that would not be an issue but with the wind as strong as it was, it was stinging my face… I kid you not.

I thought I was going to die several times.  There were a few cars that I could have swore were purposely trying to hit me.  I don’t think that they wanted me on the road…. they probably didn’t think I belonged there.

One thing I did notice with that long of a ride is that I need to get smooth tires put on.  I currently have mountain terrain tires and it makes for a much harder ride.  I also need to get some emergency supplies and carry them with if I am going to go that far as well.

I just need to find nice and safe 10 mile tracks… maybe on backroads or something.  I just don’t know.

So I get back home, jump off the bike and start with my running.  I had planned a 5k for this stretch… my normal route.  I fully understand what they mean by a brick… your feet feel like they have bricks tied to them after a bike ride like that.  The first 2 kilometers were quite slow for me and I felt like I was not going to make it the whole way without stopping.

About my 3rd kilometer I started to feel better and picked up the pace a little bit.  If you go back and look at my stats I probably have negative splits at this point.

At the end of the run where I normally “turn it on” I did so and finished realizing that I had more in me!  Looking back, it was a very slow pace.  I need to stick with my pace training numbers and push myself in the future to stay true to those numbers.  I think my body will keep up with me at point.

So this whole workout I was listening to Dream Theater.  It is nice that they have 20 minute songs!  It kept me going the entire way.  I have thought about listening to some audio books on these runs but to tell you the truth I am worried about being distracted and that is the last thing I want to do.

All in all, I was impressed with what I had just done.  Add some swimming onto that and I, technically, did everything needed for a triathlon.  This kind of proved that I can do it, with no problem.  I has been a while since I have been in the water but I am a fish, after all.   Swimming will probably be one of my strongest areas.

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!
