My triathlon derailed by this crap? Possibly!

By Skip

I just saw this article posted online at Miami Herald.  The park they are talking about, Crandon Park,  is where my race is suppose to take place.  I hope this is cleared up by this weekend!

Health advisory issued for South Florida beach waters

The Broward and Miami-Dade County Health departments have issued advisories warning swimmers to steer clear of certain beaches because of high levels of bacteria.

Affected beaches include Crandon Beach on Key Biscayne, Hallandale Beach Boulevard at State Road A1A in Hallandale Beach and the beach at Harrison Street and near Minnesota and Cutler streets at State Road A1A in Hollywood.

Miami-Dade has been monitoring the quality of water weekly at 15 beach sites since August 2002.

Key Biscayne’s Crandon Park was flagged because two consecutive samples exceeded the state recommended standard for enterococci — the culprit for contamination in the Hollywood and Hallandale beaches as well.

Enteric bacteria normally inhabit the intestinal track of humans and animals, causing illness, infections and human disease.

Water contact can pose an increased chance of illness, especially for susceptible individuals.

A high presence of enterococci indicates fecal pollution, which may be caused by sewage and storm water runoff.

“It’s not an unusual thing to happen,” said Candy Sims, spokeswoman for the Broward County Health Department.

“It could even be that a flock of birds was in that particular location.”

Swim advisories are not uncommon for Crandon Park during rainy seasons, said Edith Torres, spokesperson for Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation.

Visitors are informed at tollbooths upon entering the park. Flyers and no swim signs have been posted throughout the beach area as well.

The beaches in the village of Key Biscayne have not been affected.

Additional samples at each of the affected locations have been collected and results are pending.

Updates will be posted at

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
