No rest for the determined

By Skip

Enough time off, time to get back to work.  I have an intense workout week scheduled and then a slight taper next week.  I was glad to see that the swim was the first thing back on my schedule as that is one area that I really need to work on.  The positive thing to remember is that I am not the worst swimmer but I am certainly not the best…. by far!

This was my workout schedule today (2050 yards)

  • WU: 250 @ low aerobic intensity
    • 6 x 25 drills, RI=0:10
  • MS: 11 x 100 @ moderate aerobic intensity, RI=0:05
    • 6 x 25 @ speed intensity, RI=0:20
    • 6 x 25 kick, RI=0:15
  • CD: 250 @ low aerobic intensity

I felt really good in the pool.  My confidence level has really shot up and I am concentrating on things that I think I am doing wrong… that is the problem… I am just guessing at this point.   There is no substitute for a real swim coach which I will have to hire around the first of the year to prep me for Alcatraz.  I will also be training for an Olympic distance at that point so I will need that base training year round.   I must remember to get a coach that understands triathlons and does not kill my legs!

The main set had 11 reps of 100 yards with a rest interval of 5 seconds, which I was able to stick to.  This also gave me the confidence for the next race as I will be doing about 750 meters in the water… almost double my last race.  I just have to remember to keep breathing and stick to the game plan.

Another thing I will be concentrating on over the next couple of weeks are my transitions.  You might see quite a few posts between now and then of information that I find…. I want to share it here, in one place, so others can learn as I learn.  I will name the series “Transition Bootcamp.”  In case you are searching here on the site, I do have a category created for transitions.

Next up is a threshold bike workout.  Need to make sure my shoes are clipping properly as well.  Saturday is a longer bike workout and I will head to the Ft. Lauderdale bridge again to do some hill reps.  I now know what I am up against!

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
