Preparing for the big feast

Hey strangers!  It has been I while since I have updated you on what is going on in my life.  It has been a wild roller coaster of events and injuries this year that has kept me more than pre-occupied during this season.  I know many of you gave up hope for me (actually,I hope not!)  while others were drooling at the thought that you could finally keep up with me.  Ha!  You don’t know me very well, do you?

Actually it as been very up and down for me.  I have been concentrating all of my efforts on the run, which is my strongest point as you all know.  However, every time I got started on a workout regiment I would injure myself and then my laziness would kick in.  Before I knew it, a couple of days off turned into a couple of weeks off.  I have been out there running for a solid 3-4 weeks now and I am back in the habit of kicking butt and eying my competition for the rest of the year.

I really won’t peak until January at this point so I am not going to take on any of the high caliber races this year but do some fun ones that I actually have  a chance of placing in.  I am really debating the Tamarac Turkey Trot this year as it is a VERY tough race and there is no way I am going to walk out of there with any type of hardware.  The good part of doing that race is that I won’t feel so guilty later that afternoon as I am stuffing my face with, well, stuffing (and turkey.)

The one race I am officially signed up for is a couple of days later at the Hogs Breath 5K (Hog Trot)….  That’s right, it means I am going to be heading down to Key West for Thanksgiving weekend and I will have to do a little less partying while there.  I also plan to run completely around Key West while there which is about a 10 mile run.  I have always wanted to do that and I can’t wait to take that on!

So all is positive… except for my weight.  I am still struggling with getting back into the 150’s.  I know that once I am there it will be easier to shed the pounds.  But until that time I am in the 162-163 range and it is way too much if I want that competitive edge.   I continue to try to get in the right eating habit / portion size concept again.  I have some pretty lofty goals for next year and I know that I need to get this under control as soon as possible.  You really can’t concentrate on building strength when you cutting your nutrition at the same time.  A very tough balance, as may of you know.

I will keep you posted the rest of the year and I will let you know how the post-Thanksgiving race goes.

BTW: I ran our annual “Miles for Smiles” fundraiser last weekend.  99% of the people treat this as a walk but you know me… had to run it… anyway, I ended running the 4.4 miles in about 30 minutes flat… that put me at a 7:00′ pace.  I could have pushed even harder but I didn’t want to risk injury, again.

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!
