Pushing it above and beyond my maximum heart rate

So what is the result of pushing your maximum heart rate above and beyond the recommended levels?  Does anybody know?  Is this a bad thing or a good endurance technique?  I am a little bit confused about this and should probably get a solid answer as I continuously push myself beyond these published limits.

Having said that  I broke my personal best in the 1 mile.  I have to remind you, once again, that this is part of a 5k workout so it is not like I am trying to beat this.  I keep saying this but I really need to get out there one day and run the 1 mile by itself to see how I do.  I am sure it would be much, much faster than this.  In any case, here are the most recent results:

  • Old: 7’58”
  • New: 7’52”

My overall 5k was pretty darn good as well.  I think I can keep my 3.1’s in the 24 minute range…. at least!  I would love to be in the 23’s in the next couple of weeks.  Just need to keep pumping it and staying motivated.
