Running from the law

By Skip

After work, I started off with a much needed review of our swim lesson with the Stroke Doctor on Monday.  It really helps to have a training partner to review things with and keep each other honest.  No matter how simplistic we are breaking things down, in regards to our swim stroke, there are so many little details to remember and having somebody else to help remember these things makes a big difference.  In addition, there are quite a few things, like position of body, hands, etc, that you really don’t have a concept of how you look or how you are doing.  You need somebody to examine what you are doing and physically adjust you.  Only at that point can you begin to understand what you are doing wrong and how to correct it.

Once we finished at the pool I headed home and it was time to get my run session in.  Here is what was on my schedule for today:

  • WU: Run 10 minutes @ Pace Zone 2 (Low Aerobic)
  • MS: 12 x 1 minute @ Pace Zone 10 (Speed) w/ 3-minute recoveries @ Pace Zone 2
  • CD: Run 5 minutes @ Pace Zone 2

Just as I had feared by running too much yesterday, my sets were not as fast and more difficult than I thought they would be. The second to the last set I had to be careful as the route I was taking  had me running right past a policeman at night that was looking for somebody… I didn’t want to come up on him too fast and scare him and end up getting shot or something.

Actually, the entire time I was out running the Sheriff’s helicopter was above me looking for somebody. What was kind of funny, but unsettling at the same time, is that the helicopter would shine their spotlight down and check me out running.  Once they realized I was not who they were looking for they would move to a different area.  After about 10 minutes or so, I was in a different spot and they started circling THAT area…. once again finding myself in their searchlight.  This happened about 10 times throughout my run. Anyway, I was worn out by the time I got home.  At least I ended up safe and sound and not in the custody of the Plantation Police Department 🙂

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
