Running so much I am blue

Let me start of by exploring my overall impression of running in cooler weather.  I live in South Florida so “cooler weather” needs to be further explained so that we can put this statement into perspective.  This last week we got down into the upper 40’s.  We only get that kind of weather once or twice a year but when it happens it is a welcome change.  Since I have been running I have noticed something as well….. when it gets cooler and I am running through the “old folks” neighborhood, the scent of moth balls fills the air.  Which got my mind thinking……

Why is it that this odor was only coming from a youth challenged environment?  Was it tradition?  Was it hanging onto memories from a time gone by?  Is it possible that all of these “Florida Implants” (those that migrate to Florida from colder regions) just want to use their cold weather gear that they have had in their possession for years?  There is a clear line drawn in the sand when it comes to age and moth balls…. that is unless you come from an Eastern European country, I guess.

Back to the subject matter you came to read about.  Today’s run consisted of:

  • WU: Run 10 minutes @ Pace Zone 2 (Low Aerobic)
  • MS: 12 x 1:30 @ Pace Zone 10 (Speed) w/ 3-minute recoveries @ Pace Zone 2
  • CD: Run 5 minutes @ Pace Zone 2

Somehow I loaded the wrong workout in my Garmin and ended up doing only only 10 sets instead of 12.  I might have been able to push a little bit harder but I gave about 85 percent of myself out there tonight.  I ended up missing one of the sets… whoops! It is funny how much my mind is convinced that my watch dictates my workouts… I wouldn’t want to have some weird data in my stats that I would not be able to analyze later, right?  What was I thinking?  It would have been very easy to knock out two more fast intervals but I used that as an excuse to give in.  I need to be stronger mentally and use more common sense AND not give into temptations.  To give myself some credit, it is almost the end of the week and I have been running quite a bit lately so I guess I need to not be so hard on myself.

Tonight, with these 8+ miles I ran tonight, I hit the BLUE level on the NikePlus website…. which means I ran about 625 miles total, and this also happens to be for the year as well since I started running January 1st (ok, December 31st, but who is keeping track.)

It will take 1500 some total miles to reach the next level.. yikes!  It will take a while to reach that level.  I am thinking maybe August or September of next year I might be able to reach that level.  I guess it all depends on what “distance” I choose to do for my triathlon races next year… longer distance will equal longer runs.  I am enjoying my “13.1 Sundays.”  I can see myself doing 26.2 early next year or at least by the end of the year for sure.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
