Running while frustrated and achieving your personal best

By Skip

I went to get up and run this morning and just couldn’t do it.  I was tired, it was late by the time I DID get up and just could not squeeze it in before heading to work.  So I waited all day long and decided to run when I got back from work.

It so happened that I had a very frustrating day at work and had quite a bit of stress and aggravation to work off.  By the time I got home it had started to rain and it really was not very nice out.  The good part of that is that it had cooled off quite a bit.

I headed out and started at a pretty good pace of of about 6:30.  Felt pretty good until about 1/2 way through the run and then I really started to feel it.  Rather than give up, I knew that I had kept a similar pace before and my heart rate was really not that high.  Having the information at my fingertips I kept at the pace I was currently at.

About 3/4 of the way through, my Nike+ app said it had stopped tracking… similar to the other day when I was walking.  I believe that my battery on my foot pod is about used up.  Since there is really no way to replace that I guess I will go out and pay the $20 for a new one.  In the meantime, the Garmin kept pace and gave me the information that I needed.

By the time I had finished I had done my 3.1 in 20’35 which is my new personal best!  I see an UNDER TWENTY minute 5K in my near future.  Think I can do it for the June 5th race?  There is a race on Memorial Day weekend I am thinking about entering as well… I am not quite sure on that one yet.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
