Squealing brakes on my bike

By Skip

The past few times out on my bike my brakes have begun to squeal quite a bit… to the point that everybody can hear me coming and it is embarrassing.  Doing some research online I was able to find a couple of possible solutions.  I am going to highlight a couple of them below and the link the the FULL article is at the bottom of this post.  I am going to try to make theses adjustments before I head out on my one hour workout tonight.

  • File or sand down your pads to remove any glazing. Glazed brake pads are often quite hard, and will often cause the unwanted squealing. If this fails, you can buy new brake pads.
  • If you have a used or otherwise flat pad, put a match-book cover under the trailing-edge of the pad. Slowly squeeze the brake lever to put the brakes on. (toe-in)
  • When you put the pad back on, make sure it hits ONLY the rim and not the tire. Make sure it doesn’t hit below the rim, toward the spokes. Make sure you tighten it up so the leading edge hits first.
  • In worst-case squeal problems getting the pad dirty actually helps. Use soda, grape jelly, and even oil, in small quantities on the rim to make the brakes shut-up. However, it is possible that all these methods will make things worse or just make a mess. In a few cases, reverse toe of the brakes actually helped too.

I am sure I am not the only one out there that has this problem and is searching for a solution.  Hopefully this will help some of you.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
