Swimming in cold weather

That’s right, cold weather… for Florida, that is.  I think it was about 65 degrees out when I headed to the pool tonight… brrrrrrrrr.  Sorry, I have to rub it in to all of you “northerners” out there.  Let me get off that subject before you all smack me.  In the meantime, let’s back up a day.

No matter how invincible I think I am, my body always has a way to remind me that I need to slowdown and recuperate.   Yesterday was no exception.  I was so excited on Sunday that I thought I would wake up Monday morning feeling like a million bucks…. not so fast Tonto….  The knee felt good but BOY did my body ache!  This is primarily due to that bike workout on Saturday and that decent run the following day.  I think that deep tissue massage probably contributes to it as well.

It was my scheduled day off but I still went out to train my wife for C25K program.  I love the fact that she is getting into this and the fact that she is getting better every time out is exciting.  I can’t wait to cross the finish line with her someday (not too far away!)

This was today’s swim workout:

  • WU: 250 @ low aerobic intensity
    • 6 x 25 drills, RI=0:10
  • MS: 5 x 100 @ moderate aerobic intensity, RI=0:05
    • 4 x 25 kick, RI=0:15
  • CD: 200 @ low aerobic intensity

This was the first day in the pool that I used the tempo trainer.  Since it was more of a base workout today, I stayed with a 1:05 pace and, quite honestly, I had a really hard time keeping up!  I am still working on technique and trying to speed things up a little bit.  There is a very fine line between this and I am just figuring that out.  It was a little cold in the pool but it felt really good.  I am quite happy with tonight’s workout.  The two beat kick is getting closer!

This is the last “easy” week before I get into the Alcatraz training plan next week.  I also need to squeeze in a 6 mile run and 10 mile run this week, somewhere, somehow…. Now that I think about it, it might not be an easy week after all!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!
