Today’s run with Ben Greenfield

By Skip

I love my recovery run days even though I feel like I am running out of places to run… which is a ridiculous concept.  I am always conscious of changing things up for safety reasons but also so I don’t get bored and “stuck in a rut.”  I got home from work, suited up, stretched and headed out.

Today’s run was a good solid workout.  What is interesting is the calorie count (burned) on the Garmin and what the NikePlus app says.  I usually input these numbers into an iPhone app called LoseIt and I usually get pretty consistent readings and results…. that is except for the Garmin device which gives me inconsistent readings or should I say, much lower readings. I don’t know how or why this happens.  I would think that the Garmin would be more accurate as it would take my heart rate into consideration.  I need to look into this more but it also may explain why I have been having problems losing those last crucial pounds I want to lose before December 1st.

The run was good…. kind of a mindless run and I ended up running a little faster than I had originally wanted to.  It is funny because when I run where there is traffic, I tend to run faster.  I guess I am conscious of others watching me or something.  During today’s run, I was listening to Ben Greenfield and got a lot of good info while working out….. Can’t beat that, right?

I was listening to the Ben Greenfield Fitness podcast.  This is a free podcast series but can also be purchased in volumes which is kind of handy.  If you are interested, just click on the picture and you will be taken to iTunes for more information.

Having said all of that, I also realized that I can not run and listen to him as there is so much useful information that I need to write down bits and pieces and I just can’t multitask enough to be able to run and do all of that at the same time.  There was a good recipe he was talking about that was a peanut butter and chocolate ice cream replacement.  I will have to listen to it tomorrow, write it down and post it for you…. sounds yummy!

I was running into similar problems (no pun intended) when I ran with podcasts, so I downloaded the free Evernote app to my iPhone.

It let’s me record voice messages while I’m on the go, either cycling or running. So I can record a message to myself without stopping exercise, and then the message is automatically e-mailed to me so I can listen to what I was reminding myself later on.

Works pretty well, and beats just running with a pen and jotting notes on your hand, which I’ve also done.

Thanks Ben. I have not tried that within Evernote but I will the next time I am out and the need arises. Running does tend to clear the mind and allow for brain storming. I have had many good ideas out on the trail.

Thanks for visiting the site and keep up the good work on all that you do!

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
